But the surf is not ‘just a sport, it is much more’, and ‘a lifestyle. It ‘s quite normal to come across surfers who drag themselves on the beaches at dawn to ride the first waves or see people dressed in office clothes off, ignoring the stares of others, including the parking lots along the sea to take the role of the surfer. Then continue to crowd the beaches throughout the day until sunset of “locals” ready to “surf”. We’re not just talking about hot guys running on the beach with the board under his arm, even if it’s very cool, but of girls, old people, men and women of all ages’ and even children are there in the middle of the blue to try to accallappiarsi “right wave”. That must be a gene in their blood and it ‘probably why the majority of Australians live within a radius of 8 km from the coast.

Surfing and ‘also a sport that captivates the viewer. It ‘easy to lose track of time watching the surfers who juggle between the waves and moving on the table as if it were a dance. It seems so natural for them and so “easy”: just take a few strokes until you get to “line up”, the point at which the wave begins to break, waiting for the right one, take it, stand up and just ride it .., but it will be so easy?

After digesting the right techniques in hours and hours of careful observation, even though I had a little ‘not sure about my athletic ability, with a little encouragement from Chris (do not let up +) made me believe it would be so simple as my first time on a snowboard. Too bad that only after I remembered how it was going to end the day in the snow: an uncontrolled off-piste with a fall of a rock and a black bruise for weeks on my “derrière”.

So, here I am stuck inside one of these suits, with my board on the beach looking out to sea in search of the best point to enter the water. I must have seemed confident and professional so that a surfer asked me if I had the “wax”. I looked for a moment thinking to myself “what they need wax?” Oh yeah, to increase friction on the table and not slip into the water. Well, then I would need it in abundance!

Enough talk, it was time to go into action. I threw myself into the water and began to “paddling.” I tried to circumvent the continuous succession of small waves crashing just a few meters from the beach, sbracciando more ‘than ever to avoid being dragged to shore. Easier said than done. Only later he discovered that surfers take advantage of the “rip” ie currents that pull you off avoiding unnecessary sbracciate. Too late, but arrive too exhausted off, or almost. Now, however, must ‘catch the wave. After several failed attempts I am overwhelmed by a wave. It was not precisely the right technique, but the important thing is’ getting it. The goal was to stand up now but, as I was messed up trying to keep me on the table, getting up was not an option. The strength and speed with which the wave was sweeping the beach I was scary but fun at the same time …. or at least it was for a few seconds until it turned into panic! I was about to be thrown against the rocks that were at the beach side, ** to me! I did not know how to stop that thing that was on top, although it would have been enough to think about jumping off the table. So, before I knew it, I was like inside a washing machine spin cycle, tossed around left and right. And here I am, like a whale adrift, beached on the sand amid the rocks with the board, as well, but pheeew planted in the sand, I do not know how, I was whole. But I was convinced that if I tried again I could do it. I calmed down, and caught my breath away again in water. Back to the point before you reveal ‘a grind but I tried it again now position myself as far away from those rocks. After a while, I am there, again at the mercy of the waves …. you already know the end of history.

At least the lesson, and I ‘has served to understand three things: 1. are denied their sports; 2. never listen to a man; 3. between saying and doing there own half of the sea!

The next time a lesson was not spoiled or maybe I should try on those not on the tiny waves of 1.5-2m.
