Laterna-Magika-Exterior

This futuristic building just next to the National Theatre is easy to spot as it is all glass façades. It looks quite out of place beside the neo-renaissance styled National Theatre, however it is appropriate for the cutting-edge multimedia shows which combine dramatic lighting effects, cinema, moveable screens, props and live actors to create an extraordinary stage show (which they have been developing for more then forty-five years). Mime and gesture are the only language in these shows so no [...]

East of Týn courtyard, on the corner of Malá Štupartská and Jakubská, stands the Church of St James – founded in 1232 as church of the former Minorite monastery (on the north side). In 1366 the church burnt down, and was then rebuilt in Gothic style; the current Baroque architecture was created between 1689 and 1739, the work of master builder Jan Šimon Pánek, who succeeded in creating a consummate model of Baroque remodelling of Gothic architecture. prague-new-town-hall

First mention about the New Town Hall in Charles Square dates to 1377, but not much was left from the building from that time. Several parts were added at the beginning of the 15th century, the most noticeable one is the high tower with a big bell and a chapel inside. The wing facing the Charles Square used to contain conference rooms, the wing to the Vodickova street offices and a prison. The New Town Hall served its original [...]

Schwarzenberg-Palace

One of the most beautiful and well preserved Renaissance palaces in Prague is situated near Prague Castle on the Hradcanske square. The palace is easily recognizable by its rich black-and-white sgraffito decorations on its walls. Schwarzenberg Palace stands on the area of three buildings that were destroyed by great fire in 1541. The ruins were bought by Jan Popel of Lobkowicz, one of the richest noblemen in Bohemia and later on Prague’s highest burgrave. The mail building, in T-shape, was [...]

Wallenstein Garden (Valdstejnska zahrada) is probably the first palace garden in Prague. It belongs to the Wallenstein Palace, nowadays the seat of the Senate of the Czech Republic. The garden was built together with the palace in 1623 – 30 in early Baroque style. Now you can find it as a lovely and pieceful place in the centre of Prague. Situated in the east you can see Sala terrena with three arcades. The walls of Sala terrena are decorated by [...]

prague-state-opera

The lovely Neo-Classical building of the State Opera cannot go unnoticed. The style is recognizable thanks to the frieze decorating the triangular pediment above the loggia with characteristic columns. Dionysus, a promoter of theatre, and a muse of comedy Thalia sit majestically on the very top of the opera and overlook the busy street underneath. The “occupations” of the mythological figures bring us to a rather surprising fact that opera has been opera only for less than a half of [...]
